Vaitheeswaran Koil Temple Timing: Everything You Need to Know Before You Visit

Vaitheeswaran Koil Temple Timing Guide

There are temples you visit because they are famous. And then there are temples you are drawn to — because something inside you needs healing.

Vaitheeswaran Koil is the second kind.

Tucked in the quiet temple town of Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu, this ancient shrine of Lord Shiva — worshipped here as Vaitheeswaran, the God of Healing — has been drawing pilgrims for over a thousand years. People come from Chennai, from Hyderabad, from overseas, often carrying health worries, marriage delays, planetary afflictions, or simply a deep desire to surrender before something greater than themselves.

But the most common question before the journey begins is also the most practical one: what is the Vaitheeswaran Koil temple timing, and when should I plan my visit?

This guide answers that, and everything else you need to know — from darshan hours and pooja schedules to Nadi Jothidam readings and how to reach the temple.

Vaitheeswaran Koil Temple Timing – Daily Darshan Hours

The temple is open every day of the week, with a midday break between sessions. Here are the official timings:

Morning Session:
6:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Evening Session: 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM

These timings apply on all regular days. However, during major festivals — like Maha Shivaratri, Karthigai Deepam, Brahmotsavam, and Tamil New Year — the temple may open earlier or extend into the night. It is always wise to check locally before a festival visit.

The temple does not currently offer online booking for general darshan. You can walk in during opening hours and receive prasadam on arrival.

Vaitheeswaran Koil Pooja Timings – What Happens When

The temple conducts multiple poojas throughout the day. Each pooja carries its own significance, and attending even one of them can make your visit spiritually complete.

The primary daily poojas follow the traditional Shaivite schedule:

Thiruvanandal (Morning Pooja):

Begins at sunrise, around 6:00 AM. This is the first offering of the day — the deity is adorned and prayers begin in the inner sanctum.

Kalasandhi Pooja:

Typically conducted around 8:00 AM. This is when abhishekam (ritual bathing of the deity) is performed with sacred water, milk, and other offerings.

Uchikala Pooja:

Performed around noon, before the temple closes for the midday break. This is considered one of the most auspicious poojas of the day.

Sayarakshai Pooja:
Held in the early evening session, around 5:30 PM, as the lamps are lit inside the sanctum.

Ardhajama Pooja:

The final pooja of the night, conducted just before the temple closes at 9:00 PM. The deity is put to rest with great reverence.

For those visiting specifically for the Kuja Dosha Parihara Pooja — performed for Mars-related afflictions affecting marriage and health — advance booking of at least 7 days is required. Payment is accepted by demand draft or money order in favour of the temple trust.

Why Vaitheeswaran Koil Is Unlike Any Other Navagraha Temple

Among the nine Navagraha temples of Tamil Nadu, Vaitheeswaran Koil holds a place of special reverence. This is the temple for Angaraka — the planet Mars — and it is said that even Mars himself was cured of a skin disease here after praying to Lord Shiva.

The presiding deity, Lord Vaidyanathar, faces west — which is rare among Tamil temples and is considered immensely auspicious. Legend holds that worshipping a westward-facing Shivalingam here earns the merit of visiting 1,000 Shiva temples. On certain days of the year, the western gopuram allows sunlight to fall directly on the Shivalingam — devotees who witness this consider it a divine miracle.

The temple covers an area of 10.7 acres, has a five-tier gopuram, and houses a sacred tank called Siddhamirtham. A dip in this tank is believed to have healing properties for skin diseases. The goddess Thaiyalnayaki stands in the second precinct holding a vessel of medicinal oil — a living symbol of the healing grace this temple offers.

Inside the sanctum, the nine planets are arranged in a single straight row — a formation found nowhere else in the Navagraha temple circuit.

Vaitheeswaran Koil and Nadi Jothidam – The Deep Connection

Most visitors to Vaitheeswaran Koil come for two things: the temple, and the Nadi Jothidam.

This town is not just a pilgrimage centre — it is also the birthplace of Agasthiya Sukshma Nadi Astrology, the ancient palm leaf reading tradition where Siddhar sages recorded the destiny of individual souls thousands of years ago. These palm leaves, preserved across generations, are matched to seekers using their thumb impression. What they reveal — details of your birth, your family, your past karma, and what lies ahead — has left countless people speechless.

At our centre, Agasthiya Sukshma Nadi Jothidam, located at 12 East Street, Vaitheeswaran Koil, our Guruji N. Srikrishna has been offering these readings for over 20 years. We are a fourth-generation family in this tradition, and we currently offer readings in Tamil, English, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam — both in person and online through video call.

If you are visiting the temple, combining your trip with a Nadi reading is something thousands of devotees across the world have found deeply meaningful.

Best Time to Visit Vaitheeswaran Koil Temple

The temple is open year-round, but if you are asking when to go for the best experience:

Season:

November to March is the most comfortable time. Tamil Nadu winters are pleasant, skies are clear, and the temple atmosphere is peaceful.

Day of the Week:

Tuesdays are especially significant at this temple. Since Vaitheeswaran Koil is the Navagraha temple for Mars (Chevvai), Tuesdays draw larger crowds and special rituals. Pradosha days and Amavasya (new moon) days also see heightened devotion.

Time of Day:
For a calm, crowd-free darshan, arrive right at 6:00 AM. The early morning energy at the temple — when the first lamps are being lit and the bells are ringing — is something that stays with you long after you return home.

Festivals to Consider:

The Brahmotsavam festival, celebrated during the Tamil months of Pankuni and Thai (roughly February to March), is one of the grandest occasions at this temple. Karthigai Deepam in November and Kantha Sashti are also celebrated with great devotion.

Practical Tips for Visiting Vaitheeswaran Koil Temple

➤ Clothing at the temple should be modest. Traditional wear — sarees or salwar kameez for women, dhotis or trousers with shirts for men — is  encouraged as a mark of respect. The arms and legs should ideally be covered.

➤ Photography is generally not allowed inside the main sanctum. Do respect the sacred atmosphere and avoid using your phone inside the inner shrine.

➤ Non-Hindu visitors are welcome to experience the outer precincts and architecture, though entry into the sanctum sanctorum may be restricted.
